How to choose the right CV template in 2026
The best CV template is one an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) can read flawlessly and that convinces a recruiter inside their 7-second first scan. That means: a single column, standard section headings (Work Experience, Education, Skills), clean typography, and none of the design tricks that look slick on a designer's portfolio but break on a parser — no tables, no text boxes, no graphic headers with your name baked into an image.
Start with three questions: (1) Which country are you applying in? A UK CV looks different from a US résumé or a German Lebenslauf — see the format guide below. (2) Which industry? Finance, law, and consulting reward conservative templates; design and marketing tolerate more personality. (3) How much experience do you have? Students and career changers can lead with education; senior professionals lead with achievements.
If you're unsure, the safest choice for any role is a modern single-column template. Eleven of our 23 templates fit that profile — pick one, edit it for 10 minutes, and download.
What makes a CV template ATS-friendly?
More than 75% of large employers run every CV through an ATS (Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, Taleo, iCIMS) before a human ever sees it. An ATS-friendly template follows four non-negotiable rules:
- Single-column layout. Two-column designs scramble in older ATS versions — your sidebar gets parsed inline with the main content.
- Standard section headings. Use "Work Experience" — not "My Journey" or "Where I've Been." The parser searches for known labels.
- Standard fonts. Arial, Calibri, Helvetica, Georgia, Times. No exotic webfonts. No font sizes below 10pt.
- Real text, not images. Your name and contact info must be selectable text. A photo or logo beside the text is fine; baking your name into a graphic is not.
Every one of the 23 templates on this page passes those four rules. You can stress-test any CV — including one you built elsewhere — with our free ATS Score checker or get a graded report from the CV Grader.
CV format by country: UK vs US vs Netherlands vs Germany
Country conventions differ — pick the wrong format and you get filtered out before a recruiter reads a word.
🇬🇧 United Kingdom
Two pages is the norm. No photo, no date of birth, no marital status (UK equality law discourages them). Open with a 3–4 sentence Personal Statement, then reverse-chronological work history, education, skills, and references "available on request." British English spelling throughout (organisation, specialised, behaviour). See the UK CV template →
🇺🇸 United States
Called a résumé, almost always one page (two only with 10+ years of experience). No photo, no personal details, no references. Tight bullet points led by action verbs and quantified outcomes ("Grew ARR 38% in 14 months"). US English spelling.
🇳🇱 Netherlands
One to two pages. Open with a short "Persoonlijk profiel" (3–4 lines), then work experience reverse-chronologically, education, skills, languages. A small professional photo is still common in NL but optional. Date of birth is accepted but not required. See the Netherlands CV template →
🇩🇪 Germany
The Lebenslauf runs two pages, formal tone, professional photo top-right, signed and dated at the bottom. Tabular layout is traditional but a clean single-column also works for international companies. See the Germany CV template →
Five mistakes a good template prevents
- Over-design. Icons, gradients, and decorative bars hide your content and confuse the ATS. Save the design flair for a portfolio site.
- Generic summary. "Hard-working team player" tells the recruiter nothing. Write one line: role, years of experience, single strongest result.
- No quantified results. Replace "responsible for sales" with "grew regional revenue 32% in 18 months across 14 accounts."
- Wrong length. A four-page CV for a junior role or a one-page CV for a director — both get filtered.
- Not tailored to the job. Generic CVs lose to job-specific ones every time. Use our Tailor CV tool to rewrite your CV against a job description in 30 seconds.
Frequently asked questions
Are these CV templates really free?
Yes. All 23 templates are 100% free to edit and download as PDF. No credit card, no trial, no watermarks on the downloaded file.
Are these templates ATS-friendly?
Yes. Every template uses a clean single-column structure with standard section headings that Applicant Tracking Systems (Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, Taleo) parse cleanly. No tables, no text boxes, no graphics that break parsing.
Which template should I pick?
For most roles a clean modern template wins — recruiters spend ~7 seconds on a first scan. Pick a country-specific template (UK, NL, DE) if you are applying there, since structure and length conventions differ. For creative roles a graphic template is fine, but keep it ATS-safe if you are also uploading to a job board.
How long should a CV be?
UK and Netherlands: 1–2 pages. US (where it is called a résumé): 1 page unless you have 10+ years of experience. Germany: 2 pages is standard. Our templates auto-fit your content.
Can I change colours and fonts?
Yes — every template ships with 6 accent colours and you can move, rename, or hide any section. It all stays ATS-friendly.
Does CVmake work for both English and Dutch CVs?
Yes. The editor supports English and Dutch section labels (Work Experience / Werkervaring, Education / Opleiding, etc.) and the templates render correctly for both.
